Welcome to my homeschooling journal
We started reading The Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The characters are Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura, and baby Carrie. Laura is the main character.
Here is what I remember of the first two chapters we have read: I remember Pa chopping up the pork that was frozen, a big chunk. Pa pretended to be a dog and that he pretended to run away and the girls were scared. They saw their eyes were big. Pa shot the bear and a pig because the bear was holding the pig so he got the two. He got two animals to bring them to the shed. But then they got frozen so he had to cut off the pork chunk like I said before.
There are deer, bears, boar-pigs, there might be wild chickens in those Big Woods. They had two pets. They had a cat named Black Susan and a bulldog named Jack. There were wolves in the Big Woods. It's pretty obvious.
Laura saw a dead deer hanging from an oak tree one day. They had fresh venison for dinner. The meat had to have salt put on it and it had to be smoked and packed away for winter.
The winter was coming up. The girls had to play in the house during winter. They played in the living room and the kitchen. They played in their own room. They pretended that pumpkins were tables and chairs.
When the pig got butchered Laura covered her ears, but since it died it couldn't squeal. They made stuff to eat from the pig. They made pork and bacon.
Pa put metal traps in the woods. Those things that chomp you when you step in them. That's what he put down. They showed them in cartoons before. You know those things that would hurt your leg real bad, that's what he put in the woods.
They had to play with dolls that were made out of rags and stuff like corn and cobs. Cob-corn. When Pa greased his traps at night he told the girls stories. Then he would play his fiddle.
